So...
I'm filling out the paperwork for my RBL (very nice) at my ffl and she says "We got an LC Smith in yesterday, want to see it". Of course I say sure, I'd love to. This is not a "douglegun shop" and they don't "get too many of these".
It's a field grade 20 with 28" barrels, straight stock, mirror bores and 14 1/2 to 15" lop (it fits) with original hard rubber plate. Stock finish is peeling but no gouges. 50% case color. 70% barrel blueing with a few little spots of superficial rust.
I want it.
No tag yet and she says the gunsmith still has to look it over before they set a price. I will be back to the shop tomorrow to pick up the RBL after the 24 hour cooling off period.
What price range is reasonable?

I would ask them to check the bores for choke. If this shotgun was ordered from the factory with the straight stock, it should have the long trigger guard that ends in a point. The LOP is longer than factory specs of 14 1/8"-14 1/4". Ask them to take the screws out and see if the stock is serial numbered to the gun. It's very possible whomever ordered it ordered it choked for them. Factory would have been full/full. Hard to say how much with out a picture, but a 20 ga. or 16 ga in that conditon and original should get $1000-$1500. Less if replaced wood even though the stock would cost as much as that or more.

I'm guessing on the lop, Idid not measure. Stock looks original, it's very plain with no figure to speak of. Chokes don't concern me as I would have them opened if need be.
Thanks for the reply.

I just redid a Smith with bad wood finish. I used garnet shellac and the results would pass at the factory. Just wash off the old finish with methanol and sand as little as possible, then french polish it with the freshly mixed Garnet shellac, very nice! bill

I can't suggest a reasonable price because of the peculiar market in my region. Doubles are strange birds, usually very reasonable. All I can contribute is that I consider my L.C. field 20 gauge IC/F as good as any on my rack.

If you decide you don't want it, please drop me a note. I'm always looking for straight-stocked American guns.
Thanks

I agree with obsessed! any i think the 1000-1500 should be more like 1500 to 2000 at least anywhere near my area.. that is if the gun is in good shape..20's bring a premium.
