I might arrange something in 3-5 day range for deer or black bear in the mountains of NC.

Deer season is about the only time of year when my son and I can spend any time together. This season will be slightly interrupted as he has succumbed to the siren call of a fishing trip with his buddies opening weekend. I'll probably be in the woods alone this year, the first time in 10 years or so. We generally harvest 4-5 deer a year. We really ought to take more because of the ever increasing population. I generally give the bulk of the harvest away to friends and family. They are always happy to recieve fresh venison.

Quit deer hunting years ago. I miss the venison, but not the rest of it: sitting in a tree stand freezing my extremities for hours, just for a one-shot bushwhacking kill. What kind of sport is that? Minnesota deer hunters used to be the bottom-feeders of the field sports - too many spent too much time bragging in the bars, crashing ATVs, 'road hunting,' shooting carelessly, and making the woods unsafe for man and beast.
When deer season comes to Minnesota, we stay out of the grouse woods and take the dogs down to Iowa for pheasant.

Have deer hunted for 55 yearsm issed the year the Army sent me to Korea. Where I was born and raised you didn't have to attend school during deer season, had to have your homework done tho. Deer hunting was different back then, family groups, neighbors and friends. We weren't allowed to hunt fron an elevated device or bait. Grew up learning the fine art of still hunting, stalking, standing and quiet drives. A buck was a buck, weight was more of a bragging right than rack. All that has changed, afraid that the art of the sneak hunt or stalk is long gone in Wisconsin. Now I deer hunt a couple of days with friends and relatives for the social aspect. Trying to show Grandsons that it is possible to kill a deer in its' bed, and it is working. The day I have to bait to shoot something I quit hunting, one exception is bear hunting, which I don't do anymore anyway.

I love the bow season. Quiet, serene and in my area, you have the woods to yourself. Gun season is another issue! Sure there are many hunters, who are hunters and you never hear of them and that is good. But the others are drunken, hung over, orange colored mob that knows no boundries. They will tell you that they are licenced by the state to kill deer, so you better get out of their way. They are easy to spot though. Usually travel in grps. of 3-4 4wd pickup trucks, with blood running down the tailgate. Have ATV's in tow and lots of hunter orange hanging out of the truck beds. Actually, we used to have a whole lot more trouble with them. But in the past 10 yrs. we have taken over 15 to court for tresspassing, it seems as if that kind of worked. It is these slob hunters that will take our hunting rights away. All the good deeds of the silient majority are over ruled by the obnoxious minority. JMHO

I am with Dave, the bow season is a special time of the year for me. I absolutely love it. It does bother me that I have to choose between deer hunting and grouse/woodcock with the dogs. For ten years I have always headed to Northern Michigan for a few days of bird hunting the second week of October. Due to work constraints couldn't do it, so am going to try for this week or next. I did get to sit in the woods with a bow Friday evening and Saturday. Cold, brisk , sunny Saturday morning. Ideal weather for either birds or deer.
One way I have gotten excited about deer hunting is getting my nephew into bow hunting. The weekend of October 5-7th was miserably hot for Michigan, but he was so excited I trounced out their with him, sweat, mosquitos and all. His excitement has rubbed off on me.
I did work the dogs today on penned raised quail. They were happy, but under their breath I think I heard one of them say something about missing our mid day hamburger from Lovells, MI! I got the message and promised them we would get up there.

The one thing I have never done is deer hunt. I am presently hoping to go. I also have a standing invitation to grouse hunt in Vermont and I hope to do that some day. Right now all this is too big of a trip for me. I'll have to stick with the squirrel hunting until pheasant season comes in November.
