Chuck, the problem with the nipples is they get abused by the jet of hot gas when the charge fires and also get dinged/chipped a bit as the hammer pounds the nipple against them to cause the priming compound to explode. I still think his best course of action is to see what the thread may be, or at least to define it so a machinist can cut a similar one. A permanent solution would be to have a die maker cut him a die in the thread required to fit the barrel and use it to rethread commercial nipples or nipple blanks if he can find or make suitable stocks. He might get lucky and find the thread is reasonably common. If he shoots the gun frequently it would be reasonable to have a couple replacement sets available against several years of use.

What was made once can be remade. The only question is the thread diameter and pitch. Lathe turned threads can be made to any diameter and to any pitch the lathe has gearing for. Most likely the pitch is metric.
Back when, copper-berillium was the in thing for nipples. It is hard enough not to batter and springy enough not to batter the hammers (and hammers can be an expensive repair). Fitting for #11 caps should be no challenge 'tall.

Looking at pic of entire gun I can see it's over 187 years old. As I said there is nothing standard about this ole' "shorts und suspenders" piece.

I started to make a comment about "Very Old Nipples", but desided better of it and will just keep them in my memory!

Why don't you simply post a macro photo of the entire nipple with the approxamate diameter of the thread, and the overall length, so that readers like me can see if we have the right antique nipple just layin' around...I must have 10 or 12 antique ones in my spare parts drawer...and I'll bet that I'm not the only one

Perhaps some silicone? Oh, crap, wrong kind of nipples.
Okay okay, I had to say it.

I tried to get a few close up pictures but they came out blurry. I did get some good measurements however....7mm metric with a pitch of 1.0mm.
