Anyone ever have the tip of a firing pin welded, reshaped and then hardened? Is it even possible? Can weld be of high carbon steel? If possible, any reccomendations?

A four part series about repair of a broken striker tip was just completed in the May/June Double Gun Classics e-zine

Nial,

It is no problem to add a bit of weld to the tip of the firing pin. You could use a variety of different filler rods but I would probably use 4140 so that the tip would be hard after welding. E-mail me if you need some help and we could talk about it. bill@aeweld.com

Nial,
I haven't welded up a firing pin, but I know it should be straight forward. But I'm of a machining background and have simply machined a new one when confronted with this. I believe it's about the same or less work to make a completely new pin in most cases.
