Hi guys,
I have a question to ask.
I know that the earlier 16 and 20 guages were chambered 2 9/16 and 2 1/2 respectively.
My question is 'Were any of the 12ga Model 12s ever chambered shorter than the standard 2 3/4 inch?'

According to the Model 12 book, the 12 gauge started out with the 2 3/4 inch chamber.

Why then would a reputable gunsmithing shop that deals in M12 charge to open a 2 3/4 inch 12 ga. chamber to 2 3/4 inch?

sometimes smiths that are not familure with model 12s measure the chamber of a dismounted barrel and come up with a short chamber, and lengthen it... not realizing that the chamber ring still in the receiver is part of the chamber on a model 12....you now have a standard field gun with a 3in chamber...could now also have a step after the chamber ring...if the smith decided to polished the chamber after lengthening it, which will have your hulls sticking on the step instead of extracting and ejecting.....

always ask a smith if he is familure with model 12s B4 letting him work on your gun..............as model 12s are easy to mess up if the smiths a doofus.....

No typo. These guys are supposed to be Model 12 'experts'.
A second barrel assemble was sent with the original gun to be fitted. Besides the barrel being scratched when it apparently rotated in the vice blocks, the ends of the slide rods were spot welded and apparently not very well finished. The gun is a bear to open. There is a timing problem with the gun not firing immediately after pulling the trigger. Not the fault of a hangfire with the ammo.
I called the owner to explain the situation. The fellow took umbrage fairly quick at what I had to report and hung up on me after informing me that I didn't know anything and who was I to question him or words to that effect. So much for measured diplomacy.
On a second call to the shop a the secretary politely said he was not available and that they will send UPS to pick up the gun on Tuesday thereby 'saving' us some money. That's a joke. They charged over double their high estimate and never called to have the extra work and charges authorised before doing the work.
I will be taking pictures of the 'work' before shipping it back for them to make it whole. I will request that they not use any welded or reworked parts as that was not the condition of the gun and spare barrel assembly when it was sent.
For the time being I will not disclose who did the 'work'. But we shall see what happens. Stay tuned.......

I can't believe you are not telling us who you are dealing with so you can get some "history". I wouldn't be sending them my gun, I would be summoning them to small claims court. They are ruining your gun. It will never be the same. Model 12s that have been fooled with are a nightmare to get right again. The other poster hit that nail on the head.
