We were talking about cutting script on another thread. I thought I would post these pics from a job on a Serengeti Rifles stock job a few weeks ago.

The first is the drawing for the client.

Next we scan it, flip it digitally, print, size and photocopy it, and then do an acetone transfer of the layout to the oval escutchion on the underside of the stock. On this american classic rifle stock the radius is very sharp, making it more difficult than the typical shotgun or double rifle job.

Because of this difficulty I used the parallel line method , rather than bright cuts, because each line is thinner, and less room for error. In Olde England they called this a "threaded cut" monogram.

The last pic is the finished job.

Excellent, Barry. Thanks to you for taking the time to share these projects with us and briefly explain the procedures.

The inlet strip of wood running along the underside of the stock and through the escutcheon, explain that please. Is it an extra effort by the stockmaker to bring the level of craftsmanship to the next level, or does it serve a purpose other than attractiveness?

Very nice, Stan

Stan: If I'm not mistaken, Serengeti Rifles uses a lamination technique that provides stability without sacrificing (much) in the way of classic aesthetics. I believe we're looking at three layers of wood that make up the stock. TT

Barry,
As always, your work is bold and perfect. Great job.

Your description of the process brought to mind a similar process for making plastic and RC airplane model decals. I would buy blank decal film from the local modeling store then would find the reference artwork (often WW2 airplane nose art) and photocopy it onto the decal film. This process might not be usable for your purposes, but maybe.

Thanks guys.
That is a laminate. This is the accrabong process developed by the late stocker Merlin "Mel" Smart.
Chuck, I have never tried that, perhaps I will sometime, thanks for the tip, ...
Ole bottl o' red...
