I realize this is not a "doubles" topic, but need some information. A friend of mine has a German made rifle for sale. Don't know anything about it. It is a single shot bolt action. Has a lot of engraving on the receiver and on the wood. One one side of the barrel it says Bohler Stalh with HL under that. The other side reads A Strover Nordhausen. Does anyone have any idea of value of this gun. I don't have a clue what to offer. Appreciate your help. George

George:
Also a pic of the marks on the underside of the barrel or of the marks on the left side of the barrel would be most helpful.
Kind Regards,

Right off the top of my bald head, it looks to be a German Nitro set trigger rifle probably in 9.3 X 57 or maybe a 0.22(who knows until we have a pic of the proofmarks). Slide the forend pin out and possibly remove the screws from the trigger guard and give us a gander at the under side of the barrel. There will be the marks to give a start to determine the caliber.
Kind Regards,

Along with a chamber cast and a slug from the bore will reveal which variant of the 8.15X46R cartridge the German set trigger rifle is. It looks to have been proofed/proved in June 1927. There are a few marks to the right of the caliber, date and house number which I can't really see and might reveal the maker. I'm curious, what screws did you have to turn to remove the wood? Any idea what your friend is asking for the rifle?
Kind Regards,
Raimey rse

Raimey: If you look at the picture that shows the top view of the bolt action, you will see the screws. There are two screws just behind where the bolt slides back. It also has a square-looking opening between these screws. I figure there must have been another sight there? I can't make out some of the letters either. By the way, he's asking me $1,000; and I don't have any idea if the gun is worth that, would make a good trading gun later or be a worthwhile investment. I do appreciate all your help on this. George

George, not sure on that asking price but that stock sure looks like it might be redone(finish and how much smaller it is than the buttpiece. How is the bore? At 1000 I don't think your going to do much for an investment but if you like it you may throw an offer.I suspect it might bring 5-700 at an auction.Just a guess of course. Best, DaveK

Interesting the gun is marked with the Crown/B indicating it only went through the definitive proof after finished. Usually seen on guns imported to Germany during that period from areas without a recognized proof system. It just appeared to me to have some Swiss flavor to the triggerguard and butt plate-but that is an just a gut feeling, not substantiated by any means. Sort of an obscure cartridge which won't help it for resale. Appears to be setup for offhand target with a fairly mild cartridge, hook butt plate, set triggers, extreme trigger guard etc. On the full length photo there seems to be a protrusion midpoint on the top of the wrist, is that a possible sightbase for a tang sight? Also appears to have a dovetail rail on the barrel? I have seen that 3/4 oval with the MI before, but having trouble finding it in my files again. I will keep looking.
