...when your gun disappears?

Shipped with tracking and insurance by my gunsmith, but it reportedly hasn't moved since Tuesday (stuck in Phoenix somehow). He had deliberately waited to send it until Monday so it wouldn't have to sit somewhere over the weekend (sigh!). I'm hoping that the tracking application either isn't working or just isn't being used properly.

It's too early to panic but...I was hoping to have it here for the grouse opener tomorrow. I have left feedback already on their tracking application (that was decidedly negative) but other than that...I presume you just have to sit and wait?

Is there a way to call on something like this? Some functionary within the US postal system? You hear some pretty awful stories from folks about this sort of thing and you hope you're never on the receiving end of one of these situations...

Stop in and chat with your Postmaster and bring along the tracking#. It happens to me all the time.

My experience only, the tracking information has to be tended to by a human, and, they make mistakes. I had something delivered off eBay a couple weeks ago, and the post office claimed it was still in Kansas City when it had been at my house for 8 or 9 days.

Hey, good luck on the opener tomorrow, I’m guessing you have another gun to use.

Best,
Ted

I live in a small town and the folks in the post office have tracked packages for me a lot more thoroughly than just the online tracking info. My daughter has a small business selling on line and has a home in this town and another 500 miles away l. She says that doing business with the post office here is like doing business with a completely different company in the other town.

Good luck, I hope it turns out well.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

A couple years ago, I had a fly rod shipped from Denver to Florida through the Postal Service. It was supposed to take seven days, and it took about four weeks. The person at the local post office would check the status in their database and tell me “it is sitting in a container in Kansas City”. From what I can tell the status they reported to me was always correct, but it took forever to get here. It finally arrived in fine shape.

Kansas City has terrible postal service. If you go near the main downtown post office the reason will become clear. (Leave your hubcaps home) 😂

The USPS closed a large number of hubs a few years back. Dumped the entire load on the remaining hubs. The denizens of urban postal facilities are of the type inclined to resent any work activity or supervision.

I do think it will show up.

You nailed it about Kansas City. I just got a knife I ordered from Kentucky. It came through Louisville and Kansas City. It took 13 days for a box smaller than a coffee cup. It took quite a while to move to and from Kentucky, and then Kansas City swallowed it for 6 days.

Hopefully it doesn't go thru KC on it's way up here. "Going postal" is starting to mean other things to me now.

Yes...I have other guns here Ted.

A couple of months ago I sent a gun to Virginia via USPS for repair. Tracking showed that it got as far as Memphis and stopped there for a week, and I filed a lost report with USPS. After a few more days, on advice from the receiving gunsmith, I filed a report of a missing firearm with both my local police and an email to the ATF office. I never got a response from ATF but the gun arrived the next day and tracking showed that it started to move shortly after I emailed ATF. The timing may have been coincidence, but the gunsmith had told me of an identical experience with another gun lost by the post office.
