Homeless your not far off the truth, was that intentional?
I didn't see that Buckeye was a junior member and obviously was asking a serious question, so Buckeye, here goes.
Rubbing oil is normally a mineral base lightweight oil that is used to polish the oil finish to harden it off and create a luster, or in other words a highly polished glow. Hope that helps.

I know of several guys who build muZzleloaders and use nothing but thin coats of baby oil rubbed on with their hands. Beautiful finish.

Salopian: The reason I asked is that I see that Napier includes a small bottle of rubbing oil with their London Oil stock finish kit. Does the oil contain any abrasives like pumice???

eeb, and Buckeye,
Johnson's baby oil is, I believe nothing more than parrafin oil which is exactly what rubbing oil is.
Napier rubbing oil does not contain any abrasives.
Napier London stock finishing kit, I believe is brewed up by Ronnie Rustin of Rustin's Paints London.Napier's original recipe was off Frank Wyman gunsmith this was basically BLO & Turpentine. I think it may be true to say that I am one of the very few finishers that continues to research and experiment. Most have their favourite and keep it a closely guarded secret.

Because he made his living with it, and was in competition with independants who did the same. It is/was a trade secret of sorts.
Best,
Ted

Salopian,

Are you sure Johnson's baby oil is paraffin oil? I would have thought it would be a type of mineral oil. Paraffin oil is what most folks burn in oil lamps. Its highly flammable.
