I've run across a Westley side lever ejector made in 1884. I've never seen one, has anyone else?

Interesting Mike!

In my many years of following Westley Richards shotguns I’ve never heard of a Sidelever gun. Is it possibly a conversion? I see a filler in the top strap where the top lever would have been and the original function of the dolls head rib extension was to engage the Westley Patent C-Bolt, which was the designation of the sliding bite from the pivoting top lever. Without the top lever / sliding bite the dolls head is unnecessary.

They said that the filler is actually an inspection port. I don't know. But, it makes sense that it might be a conversion.

Is that pretty early for an ejector? If not, what design would it be ?

Bryndon my guess is that the side lever locks the dollshead and opens it also.

I bet it does not have a sliding bite on the dolls head like a C-bolt gun does.

Daryl,

I have a 20 bore Westley ejector gun from 1884 with Deeley patent ejectors. The patent use No is 179, so that’s right at the beginning of production for the in-house Westley style.

Lot 231 in Gardner's is a top lever, not a side lever.
