I know a couple of British soldiers who did that simpler Jagdschein course in English it was around 70 hours in total compared to the the usual German course which takes around 180 hours.
I did the course in German over 8 weekends as a normal civilian in 1998 while I worked for Ford in Saarlouis and stayed in the nearby hunting school complex as they also had a hotel there, my room was actually above the seminar room.
I failed the German written exam but passed all the other parts then I re did the course a few weeks later paying the full price a second time to do the course but with a cassette recorder on my desk while I carried on working at Ford for a total of six months then I returned to the UK whereon I studied those cassettes against the course books for another six months then 6 months later in 1999 I returned to Ford Saarlouis but stayed in an apartment in the city. I re did the complete exam and passed it even came first on the German law section and got my Jagdschein.
I got to see and compare the different ways the courses were offered, mine was the cheapest at 3,000dms (twice) then various levels of intensity with the price going up accordingly, these were held down to a maximum of 3-4 students each paying 10,000dms over a full time 2 week period. These were mainly the sons of aristocrats or millionaires.
To me it was a worthwhile endeavour as it got me well into the German way of hunting (my partner since 1980 is German).
Now for the last 2 years I am doing the Jagdhorn playing in 2 local groups so that at 3 evenings per week keeps me busy.
The reality to me is you must have the time to do it and a decent command of German as they take no prisoners during the exam except with the verbal test where they help you to fully understand the questions (my experience). And the funds to pay for the relevant course. There are many courses on offer over here by hunters trying to make a regular Euro income and they are becoming a very popular way to do the course compared to the normal way as seen here below.
https://www.bjv-regensburg.de/jagdkurs(Our classic BJV hunting course takes place on two evenings per week (7-10 pm) over a period of five months. We offer two hunting courses per year). (The cost of the hunting course is €1,950 (as of 2025). The course fee includes all services, such as participation in the theoretical and practical courses, teaching materials (Heintges for all subject areas), use of loaner weapons, shooting training and ammunition, etc., with the exception of the state examination fee, which must be paid separately by the applicant to the hunting examination authority upon registration for the exam).
