A friend contacted me about selling his father's Weatherby...he's getting up in age and the recoil is too much for him, his kids have no interest, his brother has it's twin in 220 Rocket and didn't want it. (I don't understand this attitude.) He wants something in a .270. Anyway, the pair were special ordered in 1955. This one is built on a Mauser action in .300 Wby. He was a left eye dominant shooter, so the left hand stock was chosen. Inlays added along with special checkering, optional Pachmayr butt pad and a gold name plate. Somewhere during it's life, the stiff recoil caused the owner to have the muzzle ported. This porting seriously impacts the final "collector" value.... but at least they didn't weld a "pine cone" on the end of the barrel. (UPDATE: I have learned this was a factory option. It's called a "Pendleton Brake". Right now, my goal is to locate a 1955 period Weatherby catalog to create a proper build sheet. While not normally something I would be looking to add to my collection, there is a valid historical place for Roy Weatherby's rifles I can appreciate....and I have an extra pre-64 Model 70 standard in .270 with a Leupold 3.5-10 that he thinks he wants... with the modifications & wear to the Weatherby, it's about a "push" value wise... something different for the gun safe and for my son to figure out later when I'm gone. smile
