Headed back out again today, this time in a supporting role only. Finished cutting up half of a muley doe Monday and had yesterday to R&R, but today it's back into the truck and yet another trip up & over the mountains to Colorado's NW corner. Cow elk is again the prey and my 72-year old neighbor has the tag (Our combined families had Thanksgiving dinner last week so we could do this).
I swear, I'm looking forward to sitting by the fire for a while when this is all done...it's been quite a year. I'm starting to understand the appeal of the "snowbird" lifestyle (this is becoming almost like work).
On another note, a highschool buddy sent me a picture of a somewhat-rugged old double he found in his domicile the other day (it's history is a bit mysterious too as he doesn't know where it came from...long story), a Delphian Arms Company (stamped on it's rudimentary sidelock) SXS in 12-bore. Fluid steel barrels, POW stock, and w/an A&D splinter forend. This is a new one to me, but it looks pre-WW1 hardware store and fairly cheap (Crescent-made?).
The pictures he sent me were fairly poor so I'll spare you. Anybody here have a clue as to what he's got?

Sure, sounds like you're having a wonderful fall hunting season, I envy you & wish you the best.
If you would, please post a report on the amount of game you're seeing in general in the NW corner of Colorado. Ever since the bad winter of 22/23 I've heard all sorts of mixed bag reporting about the big game populations in that region and would like to hear a boots on the ground report from someone like you.

Delphian Arms Co. was a tradename used by Supplee-Biddle Hdw. Co., Phila.; on Crescent sidelocks, and Hunter Arms Fulton boxlocks c. 1920. If a Crescent, the barrels should be marked 'Genuine Armory Steel' and 'Choke Bore'. The Fultons were marked 'Peerless Steel' and 'Made By Experts' - wow!

Dogon: Not fully recovered from 22/23 but...improved significantly. It's been too-warm to really tell.about the elk this year (just yet) but the deer are almost back to normal in most places it seems.

I've hunted a private ranch with a common friend of ours for years NW of Craig and the landowner has told us to not bother putting in for the draw or coming since that bad winter & I'm just wondering if they are making a comeback from it. We've been putting in for points since that winter, but I haven't found a good recipe for them yet, pronghorn stew beats the heck out of collecting points!

Dogon: Lots of sage goats in Unit 4 but...not sure about anywhere else. The elk seem to be down still but this warmer weather makes it hard to tell what the real story is. Still trying here.

Got home yesterday to elk meatloaf, homemade mac and cheese and fresh peas. After nearly 3 months of being afield it was a welcome homecoming. I'll be quite happy to hang by the fireplace for a while now and plan next year's adventures. I'll also be cleaning gear and putting things away for several days now.
Dogon: Saw very few elk this year, which was unusual for the area my buddy had his tag in (he didnt fill it). It has, as you mentioned, been unseasonably warm here this Fall, but that seems to be only part of the problem. Our governer and his kooky boyfriend/husband's efforts to reintroduce wolves here was discussed with a local (who is a very credible source of information) and while he's very concerned about the wolves, he thinks disrupted habitat is a bigger issue. He cowboys for several local ranchers and he says there are very few really "quiet places" left anymore because of the proliferation of electric bikes, ORVs, and hikers going everywhere and almost all the time now. He also mentioned the recovery from the winter kill of 2022/23 wasn't going as quickly as he'd like to see either. So...no clear answers to that question just yet, just lots of troubling developments.
