I have a buddy who has an Ithaca SKB 200 E- 20 gauge he wants to get rid of. He said he wants to clear a few guns out of his safe and he said he thought $1500.00 was a good price for it. He bought it used and I have seen it at the club when he shot it and it looks like a pretty decent gun. He shoots it very well. I have read everything I can find about them and I can't find a single negative comment about them from anyone on the net. I hear they are excellent guns and they handle very well. Is there anything I should look for or be aware of? Are they as good as I have read about them? Thanks for any opinions. | | |

I have the lesser 100. It is a fine gun other than it does not fit me. $1500 is a very good price, imo. What barrel length and chokes does it have? The 25.5'' barrels are usually IC/M. the longer 27ish''' barrels are usually M/F. Longer barrels seem to bring slightly more.
The 100s are hard to find under $1000 these days.

Gotta learn to love it, ed, at least until dave upgrades the software to auto resize them. The people that love to criticize my dog, my shotguns, etc. cannot be denied their little pleasures. Your posts are often redundantly annoying as well, yet I have not noticed that you, accomodate requests to cease your drivel.

I don't know the diff between the 100, 150, 200 but I paid $1750 for a 20 ga 150 for my wife a few years ago. It was higher because it had a Briley choke tubes and 28" barrels. They are great guns for the money although most have pretty plain wood. I owned a 12 over 40 years ago and with factory loads reccoil was a problem. I refinished the stock and found the grain was in fact painted on.

The SKB line of SxS's are pretty solid reliable cost effective guns. I've owned one and been around others in the field. I have a good friend who owned a bird hunting & dog training operation in South Dakota who used an SKB 100 12ga as his training & guiding gun exclusively for years. That gun was beat really bad but was still ticking along after years of heavy use & abuse.
The only negatives I know of about them, is the triggers can have some sloppy feeling slack in them and the wood has a tendency to crack on the sides where the stock head fits the receiver. This is due to stress risers from the points of the frame scalloping. The center point is normally where you'll find a crack if there is one. Be sure to check for cracked wood on the cheeks of the stock head, most of this cracking can be avoided by keeping the through bolt tightened & the stock firmly mounted to the frame.

Epoxy bedding the stock head never hurts either.

I have a 280E 20 gauge with straight stock and splinter forend and 28 inch barrels choked like Brent said, mod and full. Ejectors, under 7 pounds. I have killed many South Dakota wild pheasants with this gun. I bought it used about 20 years ago for $600. One of the better buys I have made. The wood is nothing to write home about and the grain probably is painted on. But, a good shooter. Good to carry all day hunting upland birds.

These SKB guns are what Tony Galazan copied, (mechanically/action design), when he introduced the RBL. Take from that whatever you will, but, imo, they are well-made working guns. They won't win any contests in the aesthetics area.JR
