My brother-in-law wants to give a shotgun as a Christmas bonus to a couple of his employees. He wants to get O/U 16ga. guns and have the company name and the employee's name engraved on the receiver. His budget is $2,000/gun. He wants them to be able to walk into Bass Pro Shop or Walmart and just buy off the shelf ammo, so not looking at vintage guns
My thought was to get a nice, but not terribly expensive, off the rack shotgun and find someone to do the engraving.
What would y'all recommend?

Browning Citori Hunter 16ga at $1665 plus take it to an engraver, jewelry store or sport trophy shop. Browning is a nice shotgun that few would turn their nose up at if they took the shotgun to a shoot or hunting lodge.
I won a rifle in a competition and, it was custom built and the name and date of the shoot are the serial number.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

It would be a wiser decision to go with a 20 gauge, shells much more available. I second the Browning Citori Hunter, though I'm not so sure about getting one for $1665... JR

I gave a friend a rifle for his 40th birthday. I put it together from an MRC barreled action and they let me use his initials and DOB as serial number.

Buds guns lists the citori hunter for $1665 and free shipping to your FFL holder.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

It might not matter one whit to the recipients but once that "engraving" is done to them their value on the market drops.
A couple years ago I was asked to help locate a nice Super Fox to be given to a mutual friend who was retiring after a long and successful career with a big lumber company. I found a beaut for them. Thank goodness they didn't inscribe something like that on it.
If you know you know. If you don't you don't.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

Just a thought it doesn't sound like the gifter is thinking of investment value for his employees, more as a gift of appreciation and being engraved might be passed down instead hauled to the pawn shop.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I agree, Oskar. That's why I qualified my comments as I did. I wasn't suggesting that a $1600 Citori could ever be an investment.

Another vote for the 20 because of the off the shelf ammo. Other then that its a neat idea. He'll, I would give them the gun and a flat of ammo.

Thank you gentlemen for your replies. I knew I would get some good responses and y'all didn't disappoint. We had a family reunion this weekend and I passed your recommendations on to my brother-in-law.
I am at least partly to blame for him looking at a 16 gauge gun. I let him shoot my French O/U and converted him to double guns and 16 gauge. He is trying to spread the love of 16 gauge doubles. He still prefers O/U to S/S so I still have a little work to do. 😉
