I was browsing through GunsInternational last night and came across a good looking Griffin & Howe 1903 Sporter. [Linked Image from i.imgur.com]
Here's a link to the listing:

Star gauged barrel. Lyman 48 sight. Single lever G&H scope base. Pad has been replaced. The price seemed good to me. After a couple of questions, I made an offer and we came to agreement. I still have a couple G&H single lever mounts and this looked like a good marriage... It should be here next week, but I'm on my way to the Reno & Portland gun shows, with a stop at a couple of great gunsmiths shops along the way during this 12 day road trip...

There is basically nothing that can be done to that rifle that would add to it, whatever people see in the "California" style is totally lost on me. The listing states it's a rework, so I'm assuming that is the factory stock? The only issue I see is mounting a scope. Are you planning a long eye relief scope in front of the bolt handle, or high rings to clear the handle? Very handsome rifle, enjoy it.

The re-work refers to it being a Springfield 1903 service rifle that was "sporterized" by Griffin & Howe. The stock is classic Griffin & Howe. For the barrel & receiver, they would hide the markings with stippling and then usually put a build number out on the barrel. It has the first type of Griffin & Howe side mount, a single lever. Fortunately, I have a couple of them stashed away (7/8" rings). I will install a nice, period Noske scope that will complete the package. Fine art in walnut & steel. Here's a pic of what the single lever Griffin & Howe mount looks like. You can R&R the scope and they hold "zero". I am amazed at what they could do re: tolerances back in the 1920's & 30's.
