This is an early Lefaucheux double made by Devisme in 1835. It has damascus barrels, elegant engraving, and the signature Lefaucheux hinge-breech system, with Devisme’s refined craftsmanship throughout. What really sets it apart is the date. Stamped 1835 on the barrel, this is likely one of the very first pinfires ever made. That same year, Lefaucheux filed the fourth addition to his original patent, which introduced the pinfire cartridge for the first time. As required under his licensing agreements, the gun was also proofed and marked by Lefaucheux before it left the shop.

Dumas wrote about buying a Lefaucheux gun and carbine from Devisme and showing them off across Europe, including shooting matches in Switzerland, hunting trips in Sicily, and a partridge shoot in Russia. At one competition, he drove a ball deep into a tree and followed it up by dropping two swallows through a window. His accounts line up perfectly with the features and date of this example.

The stock on this one is a modern replacement. Maybe someday I’ll have a better one made that’s more in line with the original. If you’re interested in digging deeper, I wrote a full article over at The Lefaucheux Museum about this gun and the Dumas connection:
