I suggest you contact Nigel Westaway. He is one of the best freelance engraver I know and does a lot of work for Purdey.

This oval was engraved for me by him after seeing the scroll engraving on my single barrel shotgun: Nigel works

28 ga, hammerguns and all shotguns and rifles made by hands.

I don’t know if he is still working (funny how time marches on) but, James DeMunck comes to mind.

The last email address I have for him:

jrd@rochester.rr.com

Good luck.

AAAAAND, like many things in my world, that email address is stale. Don’t know if Jim is around anymore, much less engraving.

Sorry.

Jim is still going but maybe not as strong as in past years.

I understand he did not renew his FFL and is not looking for or taking any engraving work.

That's too bad, he is a fantastic engraver.

I believe Winston Churchill had a years long backlog of work at the time of his death. He wasn’t able to put in as many hours at the bench as he had when he was younger. Trying to nip that in the bud would be wise for any craftsman.

A few gunsmiths have retired, but, take on work here and there that “interests them”, whatever that might be. Fresh talent, in either endeavor, seems scarce at the moment.

Best,
Ted

I don’t know of any up and comers. Apparently nobody else does either. There must be some out there

There’s plenty of established engraving talent and up-and-coming talent coming up. The engraving program at Emporia State (arguably the finest engraving school/program in the Americas) is usually packed full of students. Young adults and even some older adults learning the craft. Emporia State has no problem enrolling students.

I think some of the slow responses to these types of threads is that some folks get tired of posting who they use for this and that because just after a little while of doing that…..when they make the call to get some work done, all of the sudden their favorite, go-to smith is backed up and can’t take on their job.

FEGA has several up-and-coming younger engravers. Our COO is Van Angle and you can email your request to fegainfo@fega.com. He can then send your contact info to some of them and if interested you should hear from some of them.
