Years ago I had a beautiful WJ Jeffery SLE with Purdey nose and when I researched I found a Jeffery catalog that explained they used it as a better means of stabilizing the ejectors. I think they are cool

Interesting as I just never thought of that support to the ejectors.

For what it is worth, the Uggy is a non ejector gun, and, I presume, the only reason for the third fastener is the 3” proof. But, I’ll listen to any ideas anybody else might have. The gun is well short of 6 1/2 lbs, and the damn thing will rattle your teeth with 1 1/8 ounce loads. If anyone ever shot a 3” round out of it, I’d wager they didn’t do it twice.

I shoot some skeet with it, using 1 ounce 12 gauge loads. The chokes have been let out, and if I had to shoot steel I’d shoot it out of this one.

I keep it around as a travel gun, I have a little kit with spare strikers and the tool to remove the discs, but, since I have them, I’ll never need them. Sorta like the skunk kit for the dog. If you asked the typical guy in the US, who might buy a new double gun, circa 1972, what a hidden third fastener was, I bet 99 times out of 100 you’d get a blank stare.

You may want to peruse the Webley catalogs of the era for a direct answer. Birmingham makers definitely employed the feature as I have it on my G&S Holloway and another gun that also likely originated in Birmingham.

Thanks. In the Webley & Scott 1922 Wholesale Catalog, I did manage to find one high grade model W. & C. Scott & Sons shotgun offered in BL and SL that did have a concealed top sliding bolt. All other catalog offerings were either the cross-bolt or screw grip rib extension type fasteners.

pretty much standard on Aya 53 and 56, which also both come with side clips to action.

Interesting. Very nice shotguns. According to ASI, the AyA Model 53 was first produced in the early 1950's and the Model 56 made in 1941. ASI states that both models utilize the Purdey triple-bite bolting system & were designed specifically for British tastes.
