A friend has an otherwise nice vintage boxlock with some moderate to seriously marred screws. Are there guys out there who specialize in fixing this headache? Thanks for any advice/suggestions.

Bill,
Del Whitman in TC Michigan did a great job doing that for me while going over my Churchill.

This is the best way to handle damaged slots in my opinion, make a new screw and have it engraved to match.

Interesting video. I wonder if a sonic bath would have helped release the screw? Also I would have used a better release agent than WD40. And I would have liked to see how he timed the new screw.

Exactly. He lost me at around the 4:09 mark when he started banging on an engraved screw head with what appears to be at least a 12 ounce ball peen hammer. I almost quit watching right then, but it was like trying not to look at a gruesome accident. Of course, his use of WD-40 for a penetrating oil was a huge mistake too. There was a total lack of care and patience involved. He ended up wringing the right screw head off without even trying to use a soldering iron or other source of localized heat.

The Allen head screw he used to make a crude replacement appeared to be stainless steel, in spite of the rust in the threads. I guess he covered that with his statement, "It is what it is." What it is was disgraceful, as bushveld already noted. Yet he was proud enough to actually make a video, and post it on YouTube.

Toward the very end, at around 32:40, we finally got a close look at his screwdriver blade tip. It wasn't even close to being a correct hollow ground tip for gun screws. Actually, it had so much taper, it was more like a dull cold chisel than a proper screwdriver.
