I purchased two 16 ga. German shotguns many years ago at the Vegas show that precedes or follows the "Shot Show". The Philip Reeb was easy to identify as the name was on the barrels. However the Ernst Schlegelmilch was not. It took me several years to see the name stamped into the breech face surrounding one of the firing pins. Does anyone know anything about either of these guns. I have seen a JJ Reeb, but no Philip Reeb, although I have heard they are related. As for the Schlegelmilch, it was affiliated to the Theime/Schlegelmilch company somehow? That's all I know.

Bob Jones or his sidekick Reeb more than likely owned the Reeb.

Carl Baird, Schegelmilch was a name associated with several gun makers, in addition to Ernst and Theime/Scheglemilch there was Louis that was involved in the design of the Commision Model 1888 rifle for the Prussian army, in particular the bolt. While likely too young for involvement with your gun, the son of Alfred (Fred) Schegelmilch who worked for Heym and Walter Grass was studying to become a gunmaker in the 1980s, so the name continues in the business. Hi, I watched for several days after posting my question, and as in the past got a couple responses, but nothing I didn't already know. I was hoping someone had a gun like mine. No such luck. Anyway while looking tonight I saw that you had posted about Ernst and his gun, so I just read your note with interest. Years ago, when I called the German collectors association I spoke to a very nice older fellow who verified my gun through pictures I sent him, and at the time he said I was probably a lone wolf. Seems like he's right. My purpose in finding out the history of my guns is that the back story can be as interesting as the gun itself. To date all I really know is that the Schlegelmilch family made guns of their own under several family names and were partners with Theime on a grander scale. I guess that will have to do. Thank you for the information above.
Carl

Fotos of the platform & of ALL the marks are paramount in obtaining info. Without those we are just guessing.

Kindly send any and all fotos to me & I'll gladly post them for you. For the most part, there were small merry bands of mechanics that did the heavy lifting for making weapons platforms. There were Systemmachers, Laufmachers, Schafters & Fahrrädermachers just to name a few. So if you fancied a gun or a bicycle, these guys more than likely played a part in the construction of said item. So in order to be paid & take responsibility for work, they applied a mark to the platform that pointed to them & likely wise they took compensation & liability. Therefore, each gun will wear mechanic marks.
