I bought this rifle in 2011 and have been feeding it successfully with .45-70 brass necked down firstly in a friends .40-65 die and then in a Lee .33 WCF die. I anneal after each stage.

I have finally found a box of original factory ammunition pictured here. The box is Remington c.1949 from the date code and 16 rounds appear to be original to it.

Normally I am not pleased to find I have bought a mixed box, but in this case the 4 alien rounds (all nickel jacketed FNSP) are of some interest.

The 3 Winchester rounds have a 2 piece primer cup clearly designed to avoid the risk of accidental magazine detonations.

The round at bottom left, Remington U.M.C. with a U stamped on the primer has a slightly stepped head.

Parabola,
Thanks for sharing this. I’m very familiar with the issue of accidental discharge in tubular magazines, but I have never seen two piece primer cups. That’s a beautiful rifle by the way.

According to my re-print of the Winchester No. 82 (c. 1912?) catalogue they were Winchester 5 1/2 primers.

That's interesting, I have 30 WCF and 32 Special rounds with the two piece primers and never gave a thought to them, other than that they were an indication of age.

I doubt your bullets are cupronickel though, for a short period of time bullets were given a tin, I think tin, wash to cut down on fouling. I have a Winchester 32, with 2 piece primer, that has at least half of the wash rubbed off. I'm guessing the adoption of gilding metal ended that process.

Very nice rifle, I'm sure you'll enjoy shooting it, especially with the shotgun butt.

Tim, not the best photo (I didn’t want to bend the book) but you will see that your .30/30 round will have a 5 primer whilst the .32 Winchester Special should have a 5 1/2.

I assume that they are both Large Rifle size.
