Nothing about that rifle says "Owen" to me.

I was in contact with an acquaintance who works for Rock Island and told him I don’t believe Bob Owen was ever within 100 miles of that gun. Initially, he was a bit upset with me and repeatedly said their (RIA) “experts all verified the gun”. I nicely (well, I thought I was nice) told him their “experts” were wrong. I also question whether the gun had ever been owned by Elmer Keith as I highly doubt that as well. I’ve never heard of any connection between the two and have never read anywhere that Keith mentioned Owen. But that part I don’t know for certain. I am 100% certain Bob Owen never touched that gun.

The apprentice engraver even spelled Sauquoit wrong on the bbl in those big Playskool font letters.
A real Bobby Owen sporter.... Sure,,how many do you want?

I wonder what it sold for at RIA in 1998?

Wow, this is getting confusing: Apparently this gun sold in 1998 for some unknown amount. Then sold again in July 2024 for $700. Now sold at least a third time in Dec 2024 for, get this, realized cost of $5581 (check out RIA's listing). And every time it sold with the engraving on the barrel with incorrect spelling of Saquoit NY. (Sauquoit NY) Even the ad shown above has the description spelled wrong. And then RIA "experts" swore on a stake of bibles it was a RG Owen rifle.
I am not a lawyer but I do usually stay in Holiday Inn's, this seems to be close to or maybe full blown fraud. If I am wrong please correct me.

This is not the first misrepresented rifle sold by RIA. Michael Petrov had me help him inform RIA of a faked Sharps 1874. RIA did not pull it or modify their description of it, so it went as listed, though that was known to be wrong.
However, I never stay in Holiday Inns...

But to the best of my recollection, the rifle had a very distinctive burn mark on it. It had been at auction a few years previously with that mark but a very different configuration and condition. It looked to have been rebarreled with a different size and configuration of barrel and some other things that I do not recall. Michael showed me a lot of documentation to be sure I was comfortable doing what he wanted me to do, which was not much.
