Thanks to Fred for posting the photos, I recently got this early Malden Niedner rifle. Since it came from Alaska I wonder if it once belonged to Michael as he had lots of Niedner stuff. The barrel does not have a number on it so as Michael wrote, Niedner did not make this barrel but used Savage or Winchester barrels. The action looks like it was from an NRA sales rifle and Niedner added an extension to the tang. He also added a bolt hold closed plunger on the safety lug ala Barney Worthen. The inletting is similar to Wundhammer with little chisel marks. I must have sent the inletting photo twice and missed the one with the foreend inletting, I will resend that one to Fred. The butt plate is kind of unusual with 3 screws. I kind of like this one in 25 Niedner HP which I think is just a 25-06, I will find that out soon.

Great rifle Dan, I like it. That fiddleback grain might have effected the gunsmiths choice of inletting tool. Hard to make a long thin cut without it following the grain and tearing out a chunk. The little gouge would let him make smaller more controlled cuts. Just speculation based on my limited stockmaking experience.

A small caliber, high velocity rifle with a bank of leaf sights and no scope is a bit unusual. It lends credibility to my collection of iron sighted Springfields. Thanks for the great pictures.

Maybe the thought in selecting the caliber was less recoil? That would be nice.

Remember that Niedner left Maulden in 1920, so this gun was built before that and scopes weren't yet very popular.

Does the tang extension serve any purpose? Does it look like it was done when the rifle was originally built? Any evidence of it maybe having a tang safety at one time that was eliminated, or maybe added to hide a split behind the tang? Is it welded to the original tang? Maybe he just wanted it to match the buttplate extension.
