Elephant and Castle Fine Arms Company. Talked to Nick Tooth a couple of times about a gun on their website...first time the bores were perfect....a few days later they were slightly pitted but 'nOt to wOrry'....I was told by him that he could measure the depth of the pits

A $3000 Nitro is insane, I just sold one for $350. That said, everything has a bid and an offer. If there are dumb bids out there that will support BPS selling $3000 Nitros then who are we to criticize. If their offers don't pass the laugh test then they will go away or lower their prices. We should reserve the right to laugh (I am). On the other hand, they may be laughing at me.

Yep, they insert a little Druid with pre-calibrated pin or short needle.

I asked him 'hOw he was going to measure pits inside a barrel.....he claimed "weth A boar gaage". I guess because he haz un English ox'cent I'm required not to question his knowledge... Needless to say I haven't called back or rode to Missouri to look at one of Elephant and Castle Fine Arms.

I can measure pits in the bore too....after I have run a backbore reamer down the bores and the pits are gone, then I can tell you how deep they were. Seriously though....a smith that has done lots of bore work and has removed lots of pitting in the past can have a very good idea of the depth of pitting, though that is very different from measuring it. If you have honed out a few hundred barrels you can almost looks at a set of barrels and tell within one or two thousandths how deep the pits are as a rule. Mike O has been able to judge several barrels for people who post here and correctly tell them that they will clean up and still be safe to use after honing. In my line of work I can tell you which of two items is .05-.025mm wider than another one at about 20" distance. Took years to gain this precision visual judgment but I can easily see how another can do the same.
If the above named smith or one just a respected looked at the bores and deemed them to be a mess or deemed them to be very salvageable I would listen to his expert opinion. Otherwise you just end up owning too many money pits to ever get to shoot and enjoy them.
