I've always been interested in how V M Starr jug choked his old original M/l shotguns to get denser patterns. Having read his book(let) that is reprinted by Cornell Publications again recently and having my appetite whetted by his mention of choking an 11 gauge double m/l to throw 80% patterns with lead shot I went on the search for more information written by Starr about this. I found an old post on another forum that said there is 3-4 pages of info about his jug choking in the book Gunsmith Kinks I. Thinking I had that book already I went to the bookshelves but found I had only Gunsmith Kinks II. Found a good used copy on Amazon and got it headed thisaway.

Looks like another wintertime project for me in the gunshop. 80% patterns with a front stuffer and black powder would be way cool.

May God bless America and those who defend her.

I know that jug choking can be an effective way of providing some choke to a cylinder bore shotgun, provided that there is sufficient barrel wall thickness available to remove enough material to create a section of choke boring. But considering that 70% is considered Full choke, and 73% is considered to be Extra Full choke with lead shot loads, I think a claim of 80% patterns sounds just a bit optimistic.

Of course, in the early days of Choke Boring, a lot of wild claims were made by various gunmakers in their advertising. All the same Stan, I know you will enjoy having Vol. 1 of the excellent Gunsmith Kinks series, and I'm equally sure you would enjoy having Volumes 3 and 4 as well.

Stanton, really look forward to your research and investigation into implementation. I always assumed there was just one way for jug chocking but what do I know. This will be fun and informative.
