Does anyone know if there is any information about J.P. Sauer & Sohn years of production and models? I have an older boxlock 20 gauge serial # 269391 that was imported by V.L.& D. Its a very light well made gun with a lot of engraving. Nothing like the model 60s you see around. Thanks

Welcome to the board.

A splendid article and photograph in Double Gun Journal Volume 15 Issue 4 Winter 2004 by our member Jeff Stephens lists in Part II of his series some of the information you're looking for, including a photo of a 20ga Grade 1 serial 134, 565 made in 1907. From selected numbers appears yours was made circa 1929-30.

Mr. Stephens' article in the DGJ Summer 2004 Volume 15 Issue 2 has a valuable "Primer On the Scalloped Boxlocks" with great pictures and detailed information on production and models. It includes a photo of a Model 40 in 20 gauge. Please let us know what you've got. Mr. Stephens will be interested in your information.

Thanks for the help. I did some searching and found some reprints of V.L.&D. catalogs from the 20s. The index shows they carried Sauer guns and have them broken down by model with pictures of each. This should help too.

Soco;
I have a J P Sauer/VL&D 12ga "Knock-About" from ca 1900. This was a sidelock model & has the VL&D logo on one plate & J P Sauer & Son on the other. The English spelling "Son" rather than "Sohn" is the way this gun is marked

I apologize for the delay in getting you this info.
Your Sauer 269391 was received by A&F (they purchased VL&D). It is a 20ga, 26inch bbl, ejector gun weighing 5 lbs, 9 oz. and choked cyl and 3/4 choke. Straight grip stock, LOP 14 1/2 inches, D@C 1 3/8 in, D@H 2 1/4in. It was sold in 1935.
