Great news. judging by the room available for the punch, you could have stuffed enough powder in there to shoot it out quite easily. However, your way worked very well and did it without causing the stress that you eluded to. Great job. BTW, Brent's suggestion of bedding the blocks is a good one and one that I had forgotten about. Its been a lot of years since I have done such work and my memory is not what it used to be......and it never used to be that good even then.

Shooting sounds good. I could never have gotten the obstruction with a steel punch. The brass punch had just enough give in it to bend from the nipple seat to the plug chamber when struck. I think the existing nipples , which are a bit ragged, are metric sizing. Closest I can come to is metric 7 x 1.0 .

Dad, it was great following along on your discovery process. I was worried with all the work/difficulty of making the right setup to remove the breech plug or the uncertainty of shooting it out. That was cool you were able to get to it with the nipple removed and the punch. I was following along and was thinking a hangar might have been an option too to push it from the breech. Anyway, great read and happy you have it safely together with no new scratches! Wish we were out in the grass shooting again. Like my username? Aron

One post. That's a start. Yes, it was fortunate I had the right sized brass punch on my workbench.

It seems like a piloted end mill or similar could be made to work by constructing the guides for the bit on a lathe, which I don't have. Your thought about gripping only the barrel being worked on at the time, makes perfect sense. I had wondered about the torque that might affect the rib/other barrel solder connection.

Glad to read the OP solved his problem.

That’s a stunning Damascus patter on my set of Boss barrels.
