I've been trying to refinish a gun stock with a hand oiled finish. The stock is coming out very nicely. However, I do have some dried oil in the checkering. How can I clean this up? Is there a product, household or commercial, that will help me dissolve the oil build-up and give the checkering a cleaner look? Thanks.

Polystrippa and a soft brass wire brush or Surgical spirit (Alcohol)

Either will break-down the oil and allow it to be gently brushed out of the chequering. I prefer the surgical spirit.

Using a solvent to get finish out of the checkering right after refinishing the wood is a recipe for disaster. One way or another you'll screw up the fresh finish.

Get a single line checkering tool and chase the finish out of the lines. Or better yet get it to someone who is experienced and have them do it.

I cover the checkering with masking tape durring the finnishing process. When the finnish is where I want it I clean up the edges with a single line cutter and put oil on the checkering then brush it with a tooth brush so that it does not puddle and spreads thin. Looks good when finnished.

Woodcocker, I have used Small Bore's method and it works quite well with alcohol.

You must clean before the final refinishing and follow Tanky's advice as to applying
whatever you are using to refinish to the checkering and then brushing it.

Better to clean the chequering before you refinish - self evident.

If you need to clean out the chequering on a gun with a good finish, apply the surgical spirit with cotton buds and only as much as needed. Unless you are totally cack-handed you won't affect the finish outside the chequering panels at all.

+1 for Jeff's method. And remember next time to be more careful with your finish application. Masking is a good idea.

Clean before and mask when ready to finish. Any finish needing to removed after carefully over oiling the raw checkering can be removed with stripper applied with a small brush, let dry and brush out with some mineral spirits and a small brass brush. Wipe of immediately, re oil once and rub one last coat into the stock.
