I've reloaded for many years and am familiar with the relative "softness" and "hotness" of most American primers. I however know very little about the Cheddite brand. Anyone out there know how they rate. They seem fairly "soft". How "hot" are they??? Thanks, Dr. BILL

Dr. Bill, I belong to the 16 ga Reloaders Group and they say the Cheddite 209 and Winchester 209 are compatable to use and you substitute one for the other. You should be able to get some information also on the 16 ga. Forum. http://www.16ga.com/forum/

From the 16ga. reloading group:
Cheddite/Imperial 2 ¾” 6 pt. 1 oz. SR-7625 21.5 Win. 209 SG-16 1154 7300 Armbrust Pressure/Velocity Tests 3-31-03 Nice consistent load. Little deviation.
Cheddite/Imperial 2 ¾” 6 pt. 1 oz. SR-7625 23.0 Cheddite 209 SG-16 1237 8633 Armbrust Pressure/Velocity Tests 3-31-03
I bought the Canadian Cheddite hulls preprimed with the Cheddite primer, loaded once, loaded subsequently with the W209 but with the 1 1/2 gr. less powder. I don't get any suggestion from the chart that the primers can be directly substituted in the same loading but perhaps I haven't been paying attention.

Jack, my reply to Dr. Bill was directly from Russ Gray about the compatability of the two. Also if you go to page 2 in the forum under Primer Substitution by Tom Armbrust, you will see that Cheddite primers are lower in velocity and low in psi. I'm also sure that in the 16 ga Reloaders group and the 16 ga. Society there is more information on primers and compatability.

I saw some data from Cheddite a couple years ago, that made the recommendation that one reduce the powder charge 1/2 grain when using cheddites instead of the WW 209. What that tells us, I do not know.

Cheddites have a perforation problem with SOME guns. My Miroku Browning O/U guns pierce Chedite primers about 3% of the time. They are otherwise a good primer, and others report no problems.

Thanks to everyone. I have been using the pre-primed Cheddite hulls and have accumulated several trash bags full, sooo.... time to recycle and was wondering which primers were a good/close interchange. Seems for the most part Cheddite(even though they are French?!?) get good marks. Again many thanks, BILL

No perf problems experienced with 16 ga Elsie or Fox SW. Both shot at skeet several boxes; should have shown up I think. Keeping the Cheddites might be a good idea from the angle that W209s are a very light fit AFTER the Cheddites.
