re: double bite

Here is the relevant part of the drawing from the Lefaucheux breech-loading patent from the 1833 addendum that the first pinfires are based on:

Also, here is the original Lefaucheux breech-loading patent from 1832:

I am currently working on an article on the first pinfire and what it took to get there. (Feel free to sign up for the email list on my webpage to get alerts when I write new articles: link in my signature)

Great addition, AaronN. The barrel fastening design in the patent image is much the same as the gun shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851, as presented in the Illustrated London News of 5 July 1851. Henry Jones's double screw grip did bring some improvements, but the basic Lefaucheux double-bite was still in use into the 20th century.

Are there any Belgian proofmarks on the water-table / frame? I'll offer some general musings that might not approach the value of a Wooden Nickel but all the marks are on the tubeset. Too, that double underlever platform is seen on Germanic type offers, well maybe moreso Austrian, up till the 20th Century & a little beyond. If there isn't a Perron, etc., on the water-table, does that point to a manufacture @ some other gunmaking centre? Are there any stamps on the standing breech?

Cheers,

On the very end of the small lever, not sure if it's a mark?

Many thanks for the effort. So the nummer >>8290<< is present on most components?
