The barrels on the gun show the damascus barrel pattern running completely through the barrel flats, so I would say these barrels were made the way you see them and they are not conversions. The gun looks like lots of guns of the period, made in Birmingham and finished up by others. Prior to 1892 or so, this is the way Holland guns were produced, too.

Gentlemen,I'm glad you've seen this one. I do have an inquiry into Mr. Greener about this gun as it's the first I've ever seen - though far from the first sidelock Greener I've handled. I admit to taking a shortcut in the dating of the gun, looking at the serial number in Brown's book rather than Greener's. I have multiple copies of Brown's and only one of Greener's so the Greener book stays at home in my library rather than in my office where things sometimes disappear. Kirk Merrington has seen the gun and noted nothing out of the ordinary except that it was very solid and in good condition. When I hear back from Greener's, I'll be happy to share the information. I may have to try this one out - it told me that it needed some exercise.

Greener made some guns with a faux damascus finish.

Leaving aside the fake Greeners - have you actually seen a real Greener with such barrels Joe?

I didn't say fake Greeners...

I said Greener made some faux finish Damascus guns.
My friend just sold a Greener Hammer gun with faux finished Damascus barrels at Friendship.

You know h0mie, durning the hammergun days, real damascus barrels were pretty much standard fare. Out of ten hammerguns, you'll find perhaps one with original steel barrels - the rest were damascus. Think he ate some bad chikin there?

The barrel material seen in the photos of this gun are identical with "Wiswoulds Iron", illustrated in William Greener,s[ Father of W.W.] book pulished in 1834. This iron was comprised 25% iron and75% steel. The manufacturing process is descibed in Greener,s book. The measured length of the barrels is given as 29 3/4. This raises the possibility that this a made up gun, using the barrels of a much early Greener.I would also be interested in seeing a photograph of the so called "water table" of the action as this may provide aditional information as to the origins/date of manufacture.I am still of the opinion that the action is of Clabrough origin.

I received a correspondence from Mr. Greener yesterday. Unfortunately, he was unable to open the photos I enclosed, so I've re-sent them in another format. I don't expect to hear from him for a few days as I suspect he's at the Scone Palace Game Fair this weekend. He confirmed that the gun was begun on 1 May, 1894 and completed on 26 July, 1895. I'm in the midst of a major project right now with an impending deadline, but if I can get the time, I'll take a photo of the water table. I'm happy to share the info I get from Greener's when I hear.
