Looking for info on a proof mark on a Manhattan Arms 10g hammerless sidelock gun. There is a man holding a staff with one arm. That is the proof mark we're searching for. Looked in Belgian, German, London and Birmingham proofs and haven't found it. The gun is well made. Damascus bbls, sidelocks, cocked indicators on the sideplates. Any help would be appreciated. THX.

Probably the Sauer "cave man" or similar name we've given him.

Mike: Manhattan Arms Co. was a trade name used on hammer and hammerless side by sides imported by Schoverling, Daly & Gales, Kirtland Bros. Co., and Von Lengerke & Detmold, all of New York City. The guns were made in Belgium by Neumann Freres, Fabrique d'Armes & Dumoulin & Cie, and in Germany by J.P. Sauer. There was also a Hunter Arms Fulton Manhattan Arms sold by SD&G.

Mike, sounds like the Side lock made by Sauer. I have seen them made early enough to not have proof marks but have the Sauer caveman.

The "cave man" standing upright holding the big staff is the proof mark. Thanks to all who chimed in. We looked for the proof mark and I couldn't find it anywhere. Murph, I don't have a pic of the gun either.

Not being an expert or anything even remotely close just an fan of hammer shotguns. I don't think I'd refer to that as a "Proof" mark but as a Makers/Manufactures mark.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I agree with Oskar, the Caveman is Sauer's (Maker's) mark, not a proof mark.
