Probably what is left of the 4000 Atm test(4000 Atmosphären-Pulver) stamp?

Would that be appropriate for a like new Mauser 98 barrel chambered in 8x68s? That is the only proof on the barrels.

Possible initial proof for a barrel never fitted to a rifle action. After fitting it would require final proof Look at item #7 http://www.shotguns.se/html/germany_1890-1945.html

I don't think it to be a proofmark but something akin to an arsenal mark or a Mauser Oberndorf mark or a Carl Gustaf type stamp, if such stamps did indeed exist.

I agree with skeetx that the barrel likely hasn't been installed, but disagree that the mark is a German proof mark. I agree with Raimey that it is likely an arsenal mark, maybe Swedish. Mike

I think they might be NOS Swedish M39 (M98 Mauser) 8x63 barrels. Guess I’ll have to do a chamber cast to see if they really are 8x68.

I wouldn't know for sure, but it looks like a Swedish mark. That may(?) be military contours, and if it's a M39 barrel, I don't think it will measure to fit a M98 type action. It might be a 6.5mm barrel, if it fits a M39 action.
