My buddy back in Virginia took both his Black Lab and his GSP over to a trainer in Deleware to get them to retrieve Doves, and from then on they were great at it. I took my little English Setter with me for our pitifully short season here in Washington last year, and when I'd connect with a tall incomer she would be under it like Ichiro in the outfield! Hope she doesn't try that with a Goose!!!

I've never owned a bitch I felt comfortable sending after a wounded goose. I fear she would be turned off for life after a fight with a goose. In fact I won't goose hunt with a dog unless he is pretty tuff in a fight for this same reason.

My little girl is just a little bitty thing at 50lbs and might not be able to fight a goose, but I don't waterfoul anyway. And like Alan Jackson says; "...it's alright to be little bitty...". She was 11 mos old in this pic and still more than a little shy and overwelmed by all the activity on her first hunt.

Geese? Mine go after crippled swans. Funny story. We had a litter of pups last year. A guy from CO calls and says he needs the biggest pup that we will have. We agreed and he said he was sending a deposit. 3 days later he calls back and says his buddy said my Chesapeakes are too small for the giant geese in CO. I just said that was fine, since their geese out in CO must be bigger than the swans we shoot here!

See now! That's exxxxactly why I don't waterfoul. Isn't that some icicles hangin off the 'stache of the guy on the left? I remember seeing that white stuff in MT when I was living there as a kid. This is one of the few pleasures left in Howtheycornia, and seems a bit warmer activity to me.

Enjoying all the great stories, but I just had to share with you a picture of my new "baby", Charlie Brown, a 14 week old American Water Spaniel, retrieving his first dove from the back yard -- and heading straight for a pet door to bring it in to me. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v607/Georgepat/131_3185.edited.jpg Just had to brag a little. Nice pup, Mrs. G. Never having had a dog until I turned 50, I now see the pride of dog parenthood.
BTW, nice LC Ideal FW. I poked around your photobucket file a bit.
One tip to make it easy for you to post pics directly here, simply copy the lower of the three blocks under the thumbnails of your pics, the one marked "IMG Code". Copy the contents of this block and paste it in the text block here and you'll have a pic show up here. Very easy.

Chuck: Thanks for the instructions. I wondered how people did that. BTW, I was 57 when I became the Mom of this dog. Are you familiar with that country song, "What Was I Thinking"? I have had a few days like that! But am looking forward to taking him to the field this fall. Mrs. G
