Hi all,
Came across a great deal on an used Krieghoff Big Five Classic double rifle chambered in .470 NE. Had the opportunity to shoot it today and it was an amazing experience. I tried both prone and standing. I heard a lot about the recoil, but honestly it wasn't that bad at all. Maybe about 2x or 3x of a .300 Win Mag.
I was really impressed with the overall build quality of this Krieghoff double rifle. I'm pretty familiar with the Krieghoff K80 Parcours and shoot it several times a week, but this double rifle is designed and built even better than their trusty K80 shotgun. The way the forearm attaches to the barrel and the latch just catches and slowly shuts. The barrels closing into the action with a very deep and satisfying "thud" without any vibrations after it closes. Very impressive.
Not really sure what I will do with this, as I don't plan to ever hunt in Africa. However, it was such a great deal I couldn't pass it up.
I really love the way that this mounts up like a shotgun. It's perfectly balanced on the henge pin and points really great. The middle sight is see-thru so that you can see the game you're aiming at. If you want to change the caliber, all it takes is a change of the barrel. Even accepts a 20ga shotgun barrel. Pretty brilliant design.
The double triggers were very impressive. The break was so clean and tight. No creep at all. Trigger pull felt like it was regulated to about 4 or 5lbs each. The entire rifle weights about 15lbs. The barrel and forearm is 7.5lbs and the stock and action is 7.5lbs. The recoil is very manageable and controlled. No violent barrel jump or anything crazy. The Krieghoff is equiped with a nice 1" thick Kick-Ez and some type of mercury recoil reducer inside the stock. When you pull the trigger, the recoil just feels like heavy shove into your shoulder. Nothing was felt in my face or cheek with a strong cheek weld into the stock. The entire rifle just moves perfectly back into your shoulder.
The decocker and cocker was the most interesting feature. I suppose it acts as a safety, but really just releases or engages the main springs inside of the action. Krieghoff says you're able to load two live rounds, release the main springs with the lever, and track your game with the action closed and perfectly safe, even if dropped because the main springs are engaged. Apparently it's the only double rifle made with such a feature? Takes a strong thumb to engage and disengage it though. The main springs are tight.
