Picked up a new to me Ruger no. 1 in .280 Rem & I am buying back from my dad a H&R Rocky Mntn Elk Foundation Ultra rifle in .280 Rem. I love that chambering!! I have NEVER seen a Cartridge hit as Hard as that one seems to!!!!
Before everyone gets in a tizzy, I have heard the .30-.50 cal arguments & Believe in them. But even my .45-70 hasn't put every single animal I have shot on the ground at the shot! Some have gotten up & ran a little ways but Everyone has hit the ground when hit!
Who else out there likes the .280 Chambering.

Interesting, I have shot a few elk and seen many others shot. Never have I seen an elk hit the ground at the shot - not even those hit with .375H&H nor the one I killed with .45-110 Sharps with a 535 grain bullet nor the kills with .300 WinMag and .270 Winchester. Admittedly these were all bulls and are probably their size makes them a bit tougher than antlerless elk. But Jeff you are saying the .280 has made them all hit the ground at impact? I think the .280 is probably as good as any other .30-06 class round and benefits from the wide selection of 7mm bullets available. But I don't think it exceeds the .30-06, .338-06 or .35 Whelen on the big elk. By the way, the ..45-110 Sharps, while it did not drop the elk in it's tracks caused him to collapse on the spot in about 15 seconds - just about the same as a good .375H&H hit which I consider the ultimate elk rifle for those accustomed to the recoil.

When i shot my elk earlier this year with a 30/06, it when off on a dead run. I shot it on a full bore sprint. 1st shot was a double lung and heart shot, and went straight out the other side. Second shot also got both lungs and the heart- two perfect shots and the Elk went 40 yards. Tough animals and he sure earned my respect!

Jerry; I never said anything about Elk. I personaly have never hunted Elk Just Whitetail deer & Mule Deer & Never got a Shot at a Mulie.
Oops I also hunted black bear but with a Handgun & one year with a rifle. seems like I was shooting a .30-06 back then.
Too Clairify I Have never seen a cartridge hit Deer size game as hard as the .280! I have shot deer with .270,.30-06, 7mm-08,.308, .300 Win Mag, 7MM Mag, .280, & .45-70. oops forgot about the .30-30 & .243 The Only Cartridge I can say Knocked the deer down AT THE SHOT, is the .280 I shot 5 deer in 2 years with the .280. Everyone hit the ground a couple got up & ran a little ways, Maybe 40 yards. All 5 , 4 bucks & 1 Doe all hit the ground first.
That is Just MY observation. My father & 1 Uncle swear by the .30-06 My other Uncle uses a .25-06 or .45-90 to deer hunt with. everyone has there favorites.
