Hello new to the site and looking for some information. I may have a chance to own the aforementioned shotgun. The information I'm looking for is what type of shell I can shoot in this shotgun. I have read post after post and page after page trying to find some straight up facts on this. Some folks say no "high brass 2 3/4 shells" and some folks say that that type of shell is ok to shoot. When I say "high brass" I'm talking about something like Remington Long Range Express or Winchester Super Xs. I have used these shell for years in 12 and 20ga shotguns mostly for rabbit and squirrel hunting. I don't bird hunt much.Dove every now and then.I know that the NID was an improved and strengthened shotgun over the Flues models. I know that RST and some other companies make shells that are lower pressure and would have no problem buying those types of shells. It would be easier to buy them from Wal Mart or my local gun store. So if anybody has some information on this subject I would love to hear it.

Courtesy of David Noreen

Beginning with the first NID catalogue in 1926 they state - "Unless otherwise ordered Ithaca .410 Cal. and 20 Gauge guns are chambered for the standard 2 1/2 inch shell, 16 Gauge for 2 9/16 inch, 12 Gauge for 2 3/4 inch and 10 Gauge for the standard 2 7/8 inch shell."
Ithaca catalogues for 1926, 1927, 1927-1928, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931-1932, 1932, No. 50F, and No. 51S, all list 16-gauge as 2 9/16-inch chambers.
By Ithaca catalogue No. 51F the 16-gauge is finally listed with 2 3/4-inch chambers. I believe the catalogues No. 51 equate to 1934.

Looks like a short chamber in that NID. But the RST 2 1/2 inch shells pattern real nice in my 16 gauge even though I don't have to use them. Built in 1936.

They may have already been lengthened, post market. I shoot small quantities oh the heavy field load out of my old 16s (1 1/8 oz shot at 1185 fps). iIt kicks quite a bit less than the faster load (express, Super X, etc) and works very well. N.I.Ds are pretty stout and you should be able to get by with just lengthening the forcing cones. I'd get the barrels and chambers checked by a good barrel man and go from there. I would be concerned with what heavy recoil can do to old wood than any actual damage to the barrels.

No steel in my old doubles. I’d recommend against it, if not for the bore, worry about ribs popping their solder joints.

Me, either. I do use it steadily for ducks in my BSS, but I don't consider that an old, or vintage, gun.

Are you sure? Too bad the gun isn't 20ga or he could use Polywad Greenlite #7s. Why wouldn't one be able to use those 20ga and 28ga loads up to say 35 yards in gun with chokes modified or less?

The cheapest 16ga softer-shot non-tox loads were $12.97 or $12.79 per 10 pack of Kent Bismuth when on sale at Cabela's. Those sale prices probably will not be seen again. That load is pretty strong at 1oz 1300fps.
