A friend picked up a 20 bore side lock ejector Charles Lancaster, only problems noted were the stock is extended, and the barrels reblued. The chambers have been streached to 2.75 but the gun was reproofed for 1 oz loads, no case colors and unusual shaped side locks. An odd looking action with an extension below the floor plate. Anyone care to hazzard a guess as to it's value, I am almost embarrsed to admit he picked it up at an estate sale for $750, no it's not for sale! bill

A good friend of mine has a Charles Lancaster rifle that is in mint condition. It is one of the more unusual arms I've ever run across, that being it has an "oval" bore. Friend say's Lancaster patented the oval bore and was also builder to the royal family. I have no knowledge as to the values of Lancaster arms.

Bill, it is hard to be sure without seeing a photo but it sounds as if the Lancaster may be an early one based on Needham's 1874 patent. This is believed to be the first Brtitish patent for a properly working ejector system. The mechanism for this ejector sytem was actually in the rear barrel lump which was much larger than usual and projected beyond the floor of the action.
There is a photo of a Lancaster like this in Nigel Brown's "London Gunmakers". The gun is serial number 5331 made in 1883. It also shows a very elongated lock plate, just like a back action hammer gun.
If you can get a photo posted it would clarify if this is correct or not.
Regards - Ian Forrester

Sorry, the gun is on the way back to TX. It had two fine pins that stuck out of the action and a strange half round that was below the floor of the action. The strangest thing was the 2.75 rechamber and reproof for 1 oz loads, I believe they were Whitworth tubes.A 20 bore was not common then , as I recall the sn was in the mid 6000 range. Care to make a wild guess on value? bill
