I have a tidy 28 bore Damascus BA action medium profile hammer gun, a delight to shoot on quail and late season doves. Unlike my other hunting hammerguns, I must relax the hammers to open. Usually I shoot with breech open hammers cocked and I snap to shoot. Might I buy hammers some where with taller profile to allow the thumb lever to angle more extreme for breech opening. Are there pre-made out hammers with higher profile with same striking angles as present. Thanks in advance NorMax

Some Parker Bros. hammer guns had a 'fishtail' top lever to facilitate opening the gun with the right hammer cocked. I'm sure there is a qualified smith out there who will be perfectly able to remove your lever, heat it and put a 'fishtail' bend into it and reinstall it for a reasonable price.

A common cure is to file a little off the side of the lever where it is hitting the hammer. Usually doesn't take too much. Can be neatly done and doesn't detract much from the gun.
It's not a mistake the maker made. These guns were designed to be carried closed and the hammers drawn on or right before a flush. I can usually get one hammer cocked almost as fast as a safety can be slid off. If uncocking it, point in a safe direction, preferably at the ground, hold the hammer and pull the trigger. As soon as you feel the sear leave the full cock notch release the trigger. With most guns should the hammer accidently fall at this time the gun will not fire but the sear will slip into a safety notch preventing a discharge.

Here is a picture of a Hellis I just picked up. Someone set it up for a left hand shooter and in doing bent the top opener to the left. They did a good job as there is no discolouring and no visible harm to the engraving. how to do a screenshot on a pc

There are several way of skinning this particular cat but replacing the hammers is unlikely to be the simplest. Replacing the toplever would be easier. Both Dam16sxS and Joe Wood offer simpler solutions. I would not suggest filing anything off the hammer, they are stressed enough as they are.

The Baker Model 1897 also had a functional fishtail lever.

That example of the Baker is very similar to the 'fishtail' levers that were put into Parker Bros. production in the 1880's & 90's to facilitate opening the gun with the right (or both) hammers cocked.
