I have a Ernst Schlegelmilch 16 ga. Shotgun. It was part of 2 guns I picked up at the Las Vegas show 4 years ago. I only recently identified it, and that was an accident of sunlight being on the right spot on the receiver at the right time. Anyone know anything about Ernst Schlegelmilch. All I know is it was made prior to WW1 in Germany. Carl

Hi Mike, Thanks for the thread. I had read through most of the historical stuff before. I corresponded with Dietrich Apel a couple of years ago and he asked for pictures of the gun. After reviewing them, he said I had a very rare example of an Ernst Schlegelmilch sxs with a patented schlegelmilch latch/safety/spring? He said I probably have the only one in the states. It's a nice gun, well made too, but not fancy like some of the pictures I've seen. I was really looking to see if there were any other owners out there. Most all people talk of Thieme/Schlegelmilch..not just Schlegelmilch. Never seen one for sale either. When I bought mine,(maker unknown) I bought it because it has a nice looking receiver. Reminded me of a 16 ga. Ainsley Fox I have. Thanks, Carl

There were several Ernst Schlegelmilchs, but images of the proofmarks may narrow the date & hence the mechanic:
Ernst Schlegelmilch who hailed from Herrenstraße & was probably one of the older mechanics - U.S. of a. Patent Nr. 356378 GUN LOCK - Nr. 356,878. Patented Jan. 18, 1887
Ernst Schlegelmilch who hung out his gunmaking shingle in the late 1800s @ Steinweg 40
Ernst Wilhelm Schlegelmilch a descendant of the tube making fiend Kaspar Schlegelmilch
Heinrich Ernst Schlegelmilch who was active in the 1930s....
And I'm sure there were more.
Cheers,

I'll bet you my 20 gauge Fox Sterlingworth that your gun is an Ansley Fox, and not an Ainsley Fox- I'm a Fox myself, and I know!!

Raimey, I think the first Ernst Schlegelmilch you list is the maker of the one I have.
Run with the Fox, so sorry, you are right. I'm glad I did not make that bet. It's an Ansley Fox 16 gauge 30" AE in superb shape. Love it.

Sure, I have a bunch of family coming over today, so it will be tomorrow. Don't know how to post pictures on this forum yet so do you have an email I can send them to? Carl
