How is the best way to correct a deep gouge in a buttstock and have it blend? I have heard of using filler and having an artist blend. Your advise is welcome.

I think, if you are going the route of having an artist blend the repair, then maybe let them take the job start to finish. I would doubt that there would be much savings by doing the filler before letting them take a swing at it. Mark Larson has shown examples of some very nice repair and extension blending, as far as the artist blending option goes. Best of luck with it.

If DIY try colored epoxy or shellac stick.

I have used Mark and he did a fine job on a butt extension. I have a gouge I would like to fill and blend as a DIY repair. I have a good friend that does some excellent oil paintings and thought I might give the repair a shot.
I used Buck Hamlin on a few horribly broken stocks and was amazed how they were invisible when done.

Possibly a light fill with epoxy and the Shellac sticks may be the way to go.

I use a airbrush for background and a small brush and indian ink to put in fake grain.

Nice work. Matching background color is key. Too many just go dark to try to hide repair.
