Bluing, or case colors? The barrels are blued and the receiver was case hardened resulting in the colors. Normally a clear lacquer is used to protect the case colors and just keep the blued parts protected with any rust preventing oil.

Either way. You can probably get a more even coating with aerosol.

The colors will never peel, lacquer or not. They are in the surface of the steel, not on it. Abrasion, and some believe sunlight, is what causes the colors to fade to bare steel color. Lacquer just helps prevent the abrasion caused by normal handling.

wazz, wax is second best for protecting metal finishes. Just about any ole' wax will do, but the modern synthetic grades are best. If a gun is to be stored for a long time, a full surface (all metal and wood) is not a bad thing.

"full surface (all metal and wood) is not a bad thing"

In my 12 years living on Kodiak Island, before every hunting season I gave my rifle a coat of Johnson paste floor wax, both metal and wood inside and out and never had any rust even in that salt water environment(lots of in and out of skiffs and such). I am a firm believer in Rocketman's comment.

I agree with the Johnson's paste wax for protection against the elements, I've used it for many years, too. But, I've always been a little concerned about putting it directly on case hardened surfaces where I was trying to preserve case colors. Fine though it may be, paste wax is an abrasive and I worry that it may lessen the color with repeated usage, even rubbing it on lightly. I could be concerned unnecessarily, tho'.

Lacquer or shellac does work very well to preserve colors. It is a pain to clean off when the time comes, but it is a low maintenance way of getting yhe job done.
