i was shooting the ithica flues with krupp steel barrels with the appropriate rst shells. i was able to knock down clays. the barrels did get hot to the touch after about 15 shots during maybe 30min of shooting. so i stopped till the barrels cooled down.

is it ok to shoot with hot barrels? i was not sure.

Oooh yeah !
I just love hot barrels.
Fifteen shots in thirty minutes is only just getting warm.

you are not going to generate enough heat shooting clays to do them any damage

wear a glove if you need to

Just shoot it. The heat will affect you before the gun - wear a glove on your barrel hand.

I've actually fired enough cartridges rapidly to get a barrel so hot that it blistered a finger on my left hand but it didn't hurt the gun.

Ed Good has gotten some of his guns hot enough that it left grotesque heat induced bullseyes. But I think it was due to his acetylene torch rather than firing the gun.

I do cowboy action shooting with my old doubles loaded with black powder or BlackMZ. Even the 10+ pound 10 gauges get uncomfortable after 4 shots and too hot after 6. Of course they all have splinter forends.

It's the same with shooting black powder in handguns and rifles. I figure that's another reason the cowboys wore leather gloves.

I'm wondering if some smokeless powder loads generate less heat than others?

I would only worry about the heat if I was shooting a flurry with black powder. I could see that leading to a popped barrel rib.

I once watched a fellow shoot a flurry for 2 minutes with a pair of guns at the Vintage Cup. With black powder. He was a good shot and it was very impressive but I bet those guns were hot!

I think pairs and triples for driven birds weren't all for rate of fire. It may have prevented guns getting too hot in the black powder days.
