Thanks for all the comments. Went to Wally world today and bought Federal's (which have always worked) as well as some Remington Game loads and Winchesters. I'll give the old girl a work out tomorrow at a local preserve and report afterwards.

There are differences in both the hardness and seating depths of different shotshell primers.
Among other brands, Federal shotshells have the primers seated deeper. This causes FTF problems in some shotguns.
Try firing a box of Winchester AA's in the questionable barrel.

My observation is that the Cheddite 209 is the most sensitive primer.
I've also noticed that all the ammunition coming out of the EU looks remarkably similar in both the hull department and the primer department except for Fiocchi.
It appears that Fiocchi makes their own primers and hulls, and that all the others use Cheddite components.
Cheddite is a huge multi-national operation with facilities all over Europe.
I would not be shocked to find that Rio was, in fact, another name for Cheddite advertising claims notwithstanding.
Rio had a loading operation in the USA for a while until the place blew up but the ammo looked just like the stuff loaded in Spain.
Anybody know for sure? Inquiring minds want to know.

FWIW, I went to a local preserve and shot only Federal's. No failures. Hence it appears Federal's are the choice for shooting out of my 20 gauge sterly this year. PS. For what its worth this is a factory 2 3/4" late Savage Gun and has been restocked with English Walnut. Hence I don't have any worry's about shooting just about any 7/8 ounce lead load.

Was shooting my late model 20 gauge Fox (2 3/4" chambers) today with some off the shelf Rio 7/8 ounce loads. Had several mis-fires in the right barrel (none in the left). Looking at the shells they seems to be hit pretty good with the firing pin, but apparently not good enough. Was wondering whether Rio's have harder primers then others. FWIW, I've never had this problem with Federals or Remington's and of course RST's (which are my favorites).
Wondering thoughts and if folks have had problems with either Rio's or other ammo brands when it comes to having apparently hard primers. One man I know who shoots sporting clays 4 days a week has given up on RIOs due to misfiring. Eventually they'll get their act together. The brand with hard primers is Canucks.

That's funny. I've gone through over 20 flats of RIOs in the last year or two with not one misfire. Nary a one.

Likewise.
Same with Fiocchi component primers.
They both have a perfect record through what? 30,000 shells?
More than I can say for W209, although the current production ones are better than a few years back. I used to find them in the primer tray with no compound. The last few sleeves have been perfect though.
The Remington Gun Club when it first came out had a hard primer, but that's been fixed long ago... they simply use the STS primer in those now.
I'm amazed that Rio's have FTF issues. It's been a great shell and a good value for me.
