I recently bought an FEG 5000s and was wondering if I could safely shoot steel in it. It looks fairly new, and is chambered for 3" shells, any way to date it?

Take a photo of the water table and barrel flats and post them.

That will probably include the serial number and a number of markings and various other numbers. From that, we may be able to make an educated guess as to the age.

I'm assuming that the 3" chambering was done post production?

I believe the number 76 on the flats is the year. I had 4 Feg SxS's at various times and 2 of them had 3" chambers. Where your gun is stamped 76, 2 of mine were stamped 77, one was 71 and I think one was 79. All had ejectors that could be removed to turn the gun into an extractor gun.

It could be possible, however the other stamp is 12/70, and the barrels are definitely chambered for 3" shells. Just seems odd to me that it wouldn't be marked, but again, this is my first FEG. I'm surprised how little info there is on this make of guns, they're build fairly well, potential for non selective ejectors, automatic safety, and it appears that the barrels are held together via the dovetail chopper lump method, something I never believed I'd see on a gun under 1000$.

Yes, they are dovetailed chopper lump barrels. They are great guns for the money. Here in Canada the typical condition example sells for around $350.00. Two of mine were like new and I sold them for I think $500.00 and $550.00.
If the gun is marked 12/70, then I would think it was originally 2 3/4" chambers. How are you measuring the chambers?

I measured the chambers by using the bottom part of my caliper, the little strip of metal that comes out the bottom when you open it. Put a light at the muzzles, and put the little metal strip right to the bottom of the forcing cone. My caliper read a little over 3".
