Can anyone point me to (or provide) some information on Arrieta Crown Sabels?

The particular one I am looking at is a 20 bore 27" with markings from Hansen & Hansen, Southport, CT on it. Serial number on it puts it around 1983. Hand detachable locks, engraving only on boarder, screws, and 2 crowns. Nice piece of wood, leather pad, Gunmark pigskin case.

Where would these fall in the Arrieta lineup? The bottom, close to the bottom, middle?

Thanks!

Arrieta usually maintained a number designation for their sidelocks.
The lowest grade, Model 557 the engraving is fine scroll.
Next is the 570, with broader scroll and side clips.
Next up is the 578, which resembles a Purdey with fine English style engraving.
Next is the 601, with a coin finish locks and no engraving except the bordes on the locks.
Next is the 801 with Churchill style engraving or tight small scroll, the 802 with Holland & Holland style and the 803 with Purdey style.
Next is the 873, has deep relief style game scenes engraving.
Next is the 874, no engraving but has fine borders of inlaid gold wire.
The top of the line Arrieta is the 875 which has deep scroll with game scenes and banners inlaid with gold.
The model Orvis imported the most were the 570 and 578.
I love my Arrieta, would I shoot trap with it every Saturday blasting hundreds and hundreds of rounds through, No!!! but to hunt with it, Yes!! Because for the money I don't think any maker can regulate barrels and chokes as good as the Spaniards can!!

Thanks treblig1958,

So based on what have you posted, which I have read elsewhere (incldung Weiland's book), I am being lead to believe that this gun sounds most like a 601, but has been dubbed the "Crown Sabel" by the importer, which appears to be Hansen & Hansen.

Fishrising, the one I have seen meets the description of the 601 best.

We have a matched pair with scroll-engraved case colored receivers, h&h style hand detachable locks with 8 pins, cocking indicators, and 25" bbls with raised ribs. I am curious as to which model this is. Any guesses? (I can't figure out how to link to the listing but you can view them at doublegunhq.com).

fishrising, ( like the handle by the way ) The Crown Sable is like a 601 however all 601s I have seen have had assisted opening - H & H type. No Crown Sable that I have seen has had the assisted opening feature. Doesn't mean that there aren't some but I haven't seen any, perhaps others have. The Crown Sables have the 601 engraving pattern with the crown added. Have owned in the past. Good guns, well put together with good quality materials. Suggest that you have a close look at the rear of the action to wood fit. Some I have seen have had the beginnings of cracks at this juncture. Easy enough to remedy and to prevent. The 601 is very highly regarded by Arrietta personnel and are suggested to those who want the most quality for the dollar without investing in engraving. John Boyd has good insight into the product and it's characteristics. Enjoy your new gun.
