A few months ago I picked up an old Riverside brand double 12 gauge, model 215. It had no stock, no fore-end metal, and was missing one hammer. I repaired it to a functioning state, and took pictures as I did so. This was the very fist gun stock I have built, so bear with me, it's far from perfect, but for the interested few here you are......

While I don't have any real before and after photos of it, the first thing I did was use 320 grit sandpaper on the barrels, and buff the receiver. Then I cold blued the barrels, and made a new left hammer, it isn't the final hammer, I just made it for functionality purposes, and it works well. After all that I found a long bolt that fit the back of the receiver, a 1/4 coarse. From there I cut up some large slabs of birch, and hand planed them flat on one side. After some layout work I inlet them for the bolt, and glued them together. From there I inlet the receiver with chisels, a chainsaw file, and some sandpaper.... After in-letting it properly, and tightening the receiver to the stock blank, I laid out the bolt path through the stock to make sure my pattern didn't intersect it. Then laid out the stock pattern. I decided to go with an English straight stock, partially because I hear that it makes it easier to transition between the triggers, but mostly because I figured it would be easier than pistol grip to make, and because I haven't got a gun with a straight stock. I modeled it after my the stock on my father's Baikal single shot, that particular gun fits me very well, the only changes I made were eliminating the pistol grip, adjusting the length of pull, and adding 1/8" of cast off. Because I don't have a band saw I cut out the stock in steps...literally, with a chisel and saw I step cut the outline of the stock out. After a bit of work with the hand plane it seems to be taking shape

Then I laid out the butt plate (off set to the right by 1/8 of an inch), and began carving with a combination of a spoke shave, hand plane, chisels and rasps

With the main body of the stock finished to 100 grit I started on the butt plate, just another piece of birch with the grain running vertically. I traced the outline of the butt onto the wood, and cut it out with the rasp and chisel, I achieved the final fit by screwing it to the gun, and sanding outwards with the stock. The contour was done by eye. After that I sanded it down with 150 grit paper, and then 320 to achieve the final flush fit

The fore end metal was next. I completely rebuilt the metal parts for it (spring included) with the use of a lathe, and mill, but it was completely square, so I filed it to shape, and flush with the receiver, finishing with 320 grit, and buffing. In letting the wood to the fore end metal was easy, but determining the appropriate shape took some thinking. originally I just played it by ear and ended up with some monstrosity unfit for even the cheapest of foreign made guns. Eventually I had the sense to do some research and settled on a splinter fore end.
