I have a hunt in the planning stages and I am planning on purchasing some travel insurance. Who have you used in the past? Thanks in advance.

I've used it in the past and bought it online. Two stories showing value and both involve medical evacuation by local families. One kid, a Doctor's son, went to New Guinea without trip insurance. He had to be medically evacuated back to the US at great expense. The family had to take out a second mortgage on the home to cover the huge costs.
Another couple went on an Alaskan cruise. Husband raised hell that wife spent $75 on trip insurance. He had heart issues in a remote area and had to be medically evacuated in two stages by chartered aircraft. First flight was to hospital in Canada. Second flight was back home to Georgia. Trip insurance picked up the tab.

I have used a number of different companies but usually use the company suggested by the booking agent. The most important parts of the policy are medical aid and evacuation. Get the highest limits the company offers.

Check the insurance offered for scuba diving trips: very inexpensive with great evacuation coverage. You don't have to be on a dive trip.

Check with a local dive shop.

Another advantage of travel insurance is that most of the companies I've used have a "concierge" service that will offer assistance to their customers while on the trip. Basically they will negotiate effectively with airlines and hotels on your behalf.

One that I've used with satisfaction is AIG "Travel Guard." Their "concierge" sherpa-ed me through a negotiation with Air France a couple of years ago: got us replacement flights for those cancelled by the strike, housing and food expenses during the delay waiting for the new flights, and a rebate on my original return fare. So I ended up with two free extra days in Paris, and a free flight home (Air France refunded my original return ticket,AND paid the new return flight!). (STRANDED in Paris for two whole days! Do I hear ya weepin'?).

They also got me and my wife out of Mexico DF early and at no extra charge when they had the swine flu scare down there a few years ago and the city was being locked down.

I'm sure there are other firms worth comparing with them, but they have worked well for me. I'm using them for a trip to Italy and Slovenia this spring.

AIG is who I've used. Never had to make a claim, but it's good to hear they did you well, Mike. Gil
