Just curious, is there any practical reason for a straight grip gun to have a long tang besides aesthetics?
Seems to me like another place for bluing to wear off.

Seems to me like another place for bluing to wear off. It supposedly adds strength to the wrist of the stock.

I wonder...
Seems like it would just thin the wood out even more, which would be especially thin if the gun has a stock bolt.

In France, I saw guns with a long tang trigger guard, AND an extension on the top that ran until just behind the comb. I think the name translated to "squirrel tail" extension, but, it was one of those things that made my eyes glaze over, and start thinking about getting another beer. I would guess a long tang, properly fitted, adds rigidity to the wrist. It for sure adds a place to put some more good engraving, and an initial shield, surrounded by platinum wire. Hey, great blog, by the way.
Best, Ted

Best I can tell the two main purposes of the long tang are: 1) strengthen the otherwise Achilles wrist of a straight stock. 2) upon failure of #1, the broken stock stays attached, although dangling, to the rest of the gun via the screwed in tang. These are personal observations after having #1 fail on a straight stock 16 ga. Gil

Best, Ted Ha, thanks! I didn't think anyone read it. I'm on a blogging hiatus because my wife wants to make one and join our posts together. Anyhoo, it's funny you mention seeing that long tang/top strap in France. I'm looking at possibly ordering a French gun (Chapuis), and I'm trying to see if the adder for a long tang is worth the cost, as it is a significant dollars amount.

They just look sexy. No way they can add more strength than is lost in the inletting. I like 'em.

They look nice, and add a part of the gun that can impress (or detract) due to the quality of the inletting. Metal is obviously less likely to break than wood, but you're thinning out the thinnest part of the grip even more, and drilling two screw holes in it. Seems like a wash.

Gun with a long tang, very similar gun with a short tang: Ordering a new gun doesn't happen once a month for most of us. I'd spend a little more for the option. They look nice, if well fitted. Best, Ted

It's very painful to see most of a stock dangling by the tang that has the stiffness of a wet noodle. From edge to edge at right angle to the length, it may offer "beam" rigidity, but at right angles to it's thickness, due to flexibility, not much protection if any. Gil
